In general, the weather here is great! It's pretty dry and sunny all year round. High altitude and continental weather also means we get fun extremes.
Thanks to the difference in elevation between the Aquarius Plateau (highest point 11'253 feet) and Lake Powell (around 3'700 feet) there are a variety of possbilities for excursions; snowshoe through ponderosa pine and aspen trees on the Plateau in the morning, and finish up with an afternoon hike on the slickrock. Head to the mountains, when the desert gets too hot, or, follow the autumn colors, from high up on the Plateau down into the canyons to Lake Powell. Frankly, the possibilities are hard to beat!
Winter can be snowy or dry. It is unpredictable. While temperatures can drop below freezing at night, on a sunny winter day, you might find yourself hiking in a t-shirt (but with a big sweater in your backpack!). remember, we live in the sunny country. Beautiful days abound throughout the winter. If you like it very, very quiet, winter is the best time of year to visit, though, thanks to the vastness of the wilderness here, you can find a silent retreat all year round. |
Spring is magic and full of surprises. You get hot days, rainy days, snowy days all in the space of one week (one day). So, be prepared. Spring is beautiful here! Delilcate flowers blossom on the desert floor and birds are everywhere.

Summer Can be torrid. In the desert, during the day, either you are crazy enough to stay in the sun, or else you duck into a shady canyon by the water. But watch out for storms and flash flood. As of early July, our summer monsoon starts. It's awesome! We get massive cloud formations that are great to watch, but you have to keep an eye on them. Clouds - and not just the ones above your head but those on the horizon - can mean flashfloods, lightening, and other conditions which can be dangerous and need to be respected.

Summer nights are perfect for unforgettable full moon hikes. It is a good time to escape to the mountain, fish along the crystal clear streams and lakes or gaze up at the stars. Coyote...hors du temps is far from major cities with lights so the skies are sparkling with so many stars, you'll want to gaze at them for ever.

| Whether on the mountain or in the desert, fall is delightful. The crisp, fresh air we dream about during the hot summer months rolls in. The temperature is perfect for long hikes. The yellow aspen trees turn the canyons into rivers of gold, set in kayenta reds or the creamy colored Navajo sanstone. And when you finally walk on the cayon floor, you hear the gentle rattling sound of the breeze through the leaves and fill your lungs with delightful scents. |
